New Quizzes Outage

In order to facilitate a Canvas update, New Quizzes will be unavailable starting at 9:00pm on Sunday, September 14th through Tuesday, September 16th.

During this time, instructors should not create or edit any New Quizzes and students should not take quizzes on any device, including on the Canvas mobile app.

When is This Happening?

Instructure has scheduled disruptive work to begin at 9:01 pm PDT on Sunday, September 14, and to conclude at 8:59 pm on Tuesday, September 16th. We will add custom code to block access to New Quizzes in the browser, so the outage time may begin earlier and last slightly longer than that window.

What are New Quizzes?

Canvas has two different quiz types: Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes.

New Quizzes are designated with a solid green rocket icon in the Canvas interface. new quizzes icon Classic Quizzes are designated with a white rocket icon. Classic quizzes will remain available during the outage. We recommend that students do not attempt any quizzes during this window.

Why is this Happening?

Instructure, the company that manages Canvas, is migrating the UCSB instance to a new availability region in Amazon Web Services (AWS). During the migration of the New Quizzes database, there is a risk of data loss if anyone creates, modifies, or takes a New Quiz.
